Supporting Libraries, Enriching Communities: CMLE Grant Helps Transform Becker Public Library
A CMLE grant helped the Friends of the Becker Library enhance seating and shelving to create a more welcoming, accessible space for all.

At Central Minnesota Libraries Exchange (CMLE), we’re proud to support the incredible work of libraries and library advocates across our region. One recent example comes from the Friends of the Becker Library, who were awarded a $12,000 grant through our CMLE Grant Program—an initiative designed to enhance services, spaces, and access in libraries of all types.
The Friends of the Becker Library are dedicated to enriching their community through expanded library services and programming. From children’s storytimes and author visits to art supplies and special events, the Friends help bring added value to the Becker Public Library. With encouragement from Librarian Hilary Dawson, the group applied for a CMLE grant to support improvements to the library’s physical space.
In June 2024, they were awarded $12,000 in funding, distributed in two phases. The first $6,000, received in August, was used to purchase comfortable chairs and accent tables, helping to create a welcoming and restful environment for library visitors. The response from patrons was overwhelmingly positive.
In January 2025, the Friends received the second half of the grant and used the funds to replace aging plastic chairs with sturdy wooden seating and install new shelving. These shelves allowed the library to expand its large print collection—frequently used by patrons over 55 and those with visual impairments—and improve the overall browsing experience.
“The new shelves allow the library to bring in additional selections from other Great River Regional libraries, ease congestion, and make for a better borrowing experience,” said Dawson.
We are honored to have supported this meaningful project and are grateful to the Friends of the Becker Library for their commitment to enhancing public library services. Special thanks as well to our Interim Executive Director, Melissa Beckon, for her guidance throughout the grant process.
