Quick Tips for Running a Successful Library

Here are some quick tips to help you create a thriving, well-organized, and welcoming space for your community.

Quick Tips for Running a Successful Library

Whether you’re new to managing a library or a seasoned professional looking for a refresher, running a library effectively means balancing day-to-day operations with long-term strategy. Here are some quick tips to help you create a thriving, well-organized, and welcoming space for your community.

1. Know Your Community

Every great library starts with understanding who it serves. Get to know the interests, needs, and challenges of your patrons. Use surveys, suggestion boxes, and informal conversations to gather feedback—and let it guide your programming and collections.

2. Keep Collections Fresh

Regularly review and update your collection. Weed outdated or damaged materials, highlight new arrivals, and make space for books and resources that reflect the community’s evolving interests and identities.

3. Prioritize Customer Service

Make your library a place people want to visit. Greet patrons warmly, be responsive to requests, and train staff to offer friendly, knowledgeable assistance. A welcoming attitude builds trust and keeps people coming back.

4. Stay Organized Behind the Scenes

Efficient back-end operations are essential. Keep inventory systems updated, track circulation trends, and maintain clear procedures for processing materials and managing programs.

5. Promote Your Services

Don’t assume people know everything your library offers. Use flyers, social media, newsletters, and local partnerships to highlight events, resources, and services. A little marketing goes a long way.

6. Embrace Technology

Digital tools can help streamline operations and extend your reach. Offer online catalogs, e-resources, and Wi-Fi access—and stay open to new tools that improve access and efficiency.

7. Create a Safe, Inclusive Space

Libraries should feel safe and accessible to everyone. Design spaces that are welcoming, ADA-compliant, and culturally responsive. Train staff on equity, inclusion, and trauma-informed service.

8. Invest in Professional Growth

A well-supported staff means better service for patrons. Attend trainings, encourage ongoing learning, and take advantage of grant or scholarship opportunities (like those offered by CMLE!) to keep skills current.

9. Collaborate and Connect

Don’t go it alone—connect with other library professionals for support, inspiration, and shared resources. Join networks, attend regional events, and reach out when you need ideas or advice.
