Dr. Jenny Hill, Graduate Director of the School Library Media Program at St. Cloud State University, invites you to explore three flexible, online options for becoming a licensed school library media specialist in Minnesota. Courses are offered via Zoom in the evenings during the school year and during the day in the summer. Some courses are asynchronous.

Program Options:

Library Media Specialist Graduate Certificate

Approx. 28–32 credits

Ideal for those seeking licensure without pursuing a master’s degree. This program includes all required coursework to recommend licensure as a school library media specialist in Minnesota. Most students finish in two academic years with evening and summer classes. Includes an 80-hour practicum in a school library media center.

Foundations in Library Media Certificate

15 credits

Perfect for educators exploring the field. This certificate supports career advancement (e.g., lane changes) without requiring licensure. All coursework counts toward licensure if you decide to pursue it later. Can be completed in one academic year.

Master of Science in Library Media

At least 33 credits

This option combines licensure with a graduate degree. In addition to required coursework, students complete a research methods course and culminating project. Earn your M.S. and be eligible for licensure in Minnesota.
