Quick Tips for Creating a Welcoming and Functional Library Space
Here are a few quick tips to make the most of your space—no matter the size or budget.

A library’s physical environment plays a big role in how patrons experience it. Whether you're working with a large public building or a single-room school library, thoughtful space management can improve comfort, access, and overall usability. Here are a few quick tips to make the most of your space—no matter the size or budget.
1. Think Zones, Not Just Shelves
Divide your space into zones based on purpose—quiet reading, collaborative work, children’s activities, technology use, etc. Clear signage and visual cues (like rugs or movable furniture) help patrons easily navigate and use the space.
2. Make It Inviting
A few simple touches—like plants, lamps, art, or cozy seating—can go a long way in making your library feel warm and welcoming. Let in natural light when possible, and avoid harsh fluorescent lighting.
3. Prioritize Accessibility
Ensure shelves, seating, and pathways are accessible to all patrons, including those using wheelchairs or mobility aids. Lower shelves and wider aisles can make a big difference in user experience.
4. Keep It Flexible
Use furniture that can be moved and rearranged to adapt your space for events, classes, or group work. Flexibility allows you to get more use out of every square foot.
5. Create Displays That Spark Interest
Rotate displays regularly to keep your collection visually fresh and encourage discovery. Feature themed book selections, staff picks, or resources tied to current events or community interests.
6. Declutter and Refresh Often
Too much furniture or signage can overwhelm patrons. Weed unused materials, remove outdated flyers, and take time each month to reset your layout based on traffic flow and usage trends.
7. Ask for Patron Input
Who better to help you improve the space than the people who use it? Ask what’s working and what could be improved—then make small changes where you can.
